Trusted supply chain

In the ‘Trusted Supply Chain’ strand of our CR programme we address the impact that the company has on the environment and what we are doing to manage that.

We manage a range of initiatives under this strand of our responsibiltiy agenda.   These relate firstly to our impact on the environment in the key areas of energy, waste and water, and secondly to our activities around responsible sourcing.

Every year we procure over £500m of ingredients, raw materials and services from over 4,000 suppliers. We make food in 21 production sites and we deliver to over 1,000 supply points. By driving efficiencies across this supply chain, both energy costs and carbon emissions can be reduced. Similarly, minimising manufacturing and packaging waste both reduces costs and environmental impact.

Our actions reflect both our statutory responsibilities and Northern Foods’ own initiatives to better manage the resources it uses. Our responses also help us to address one of the key consumer issues that has emerged in the last twelve months: ‘Can you tell me that my food has been made with minimal impact on the environment?’ It is a question that we, and the industry as a whole, have to answer.
