This pillar is focused on how we minimise our environmental impact and work together - employees, suppliers and government to husband resources.
The activities we are involved in relate to our impact in the key areas of energy, waste and water as well as responsible sourcing. The company has set itself tough year on year targets for each of these areas:
Each year we buy over £600m of ingredients, raw materials and services from over 3,000 suppliers. We make food in 17 production sites and deliver to over 1,000 supply points. By driving efficiencies across this supply chain both energy costs and carbon emissions can be reduced. Similarly, reducing manufacturing and packaging waste both reduces costs and environmental impact.
Our actions reflect both our statutory responsibilities and Northern Foods' own initiatives to better manage our resources. Our responses also help answer one of the key consumer questions: 'Can you tell me that my food has been made with minimal impact on the environment?' It is a question that we, and the industry as a whole, have to answer.
