Salt

Salt contains sodium, which is essential for our bodies, because it regulates water retention; is involved in energy utilisation and also helps to maintain nerve function.

The UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey, last published in 2003, suggested the average daily intake of salt in our population is currently 12g for men and 9g for women, against a recommendation of 6g per day.

Why should we eat less salt?

The recommendation was set at 6g per day because a high salt level has been implicated in the elevation of blood pressure and the development of hypertension. Northern Foods has actively supported the drive to reduce dietary intake of salt towards the recommended 6g per day.

We are making good progress in reducing salt, with the equivalent of 33 tonnes being removed from our processes in 2005/06 (based on analysis of salt entering our processes in pre-blended mixes from the end of 2004/05). We continue our work to support the FSA’s target of reducing consumer salt intake to 6g per day by 2010.

Case study: Reducing salt in meat products

In conjunction with our trade associations and with the support of our customers, we were key contributors to a Joint Sodium Action Plan for Meat Products. By actioning that plan, we have delivered a 9% average reduction in the sodium (salt) content in our branded and own label products within the defined industry category of ‘Delicatessen Pies, Pork Pies and Sausage Rolls’.
