There is no doubt that consumer demand for organic food is rising and we already produce a number of organic products for our customers.

Because of the quantities of ingredients that we buy, and because of the methods of farming across the world, it is not commercially or geographically feasible for us to use all organic ingredients.

Given the rise in demand, we are exploring opportunities to increase the range of organic products we offer. Customer feedback certainly supports this increase and our rigorous farm assurance policy will help us source with confidence going forward.

For some consumers, provenance of ingredients, such as local sourcing is as important and Northern Foods is also delivering products, such as Naturally Fox's, which tap into this demand.

Case Study: Organic mashed potato

In conjunction with one of our major customers we have launched an organic mashed potato that is made with high quality local organic ingredients and is accredited through the Organic Farmers & Growers certification body. All of the potatoes have been specially selected and grown on the Pitgaveny Farm Estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This enables us to trace the potatoes right back to the seed and the exact field in which they are planted.
